Law enforcement breaks ground on memorial to fallen

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Through a coincidence of timing law enforcement officers from New Hanover County gathered to remember officers killed in the line of duty as the jury returned its guilty verdict against Anthony Pierce Thursday. Members of law enforcement and families of fallen officers gathered at Wilmington Police headquarters and broke ground on a permanent memorial.

“We’ve got a fantastic officer memorial wall that we’d like to do here, and we’re almost halfway there,” said New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon, “so we’ve been putting it out to the community to see if they wouldn’t help us, so we can finish it up and be able to honor them just in a very first class way.”

The goal is to have the memorial finished by next spring. Organizers still need $50,000 to meet that goal. To find out how to donate to the memorial, call the Wilmington Police Department or the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
