Lawmakers keep seeking jobless panel changes McCrory opposes

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The political fight between the North Carolina legislature and Gov. Pat McCrory over a state panel that considers final benefit appeals from the unemployed isn’t going away even after McCrory vetoed a bill based on their differences.

A legislative oversight committee recommended Wednesday that colleagues this year approve legislation staggering the terms of the three members of the Board of Review. That would mean one of McCrory’s board appointees would have to step down this June.

The committee recommendation came despite a letter from McCrory objecting to the recommendations, which also include shifting attorney positions from the state unemployment benefits agency to the board itself.

McCrory successfully blocked a broader unemployment insurance bill in 2014 that contained board changes. The full legislature would have to vote again in 2015.
