League of Women Voters celebrates 100 years
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In honor of Women’s History Month, the League of Women Voters of the Lower Cape Fear gathered Monday afternoon in Wilmington to celebrate their rights and 100 years as an organization.
Dozens attended the event Monday as they held a panel discussion with four local leaders. Those elected officials include Wilmington Mayor Pro Tem Margaret Haynes, Sunset Beach City Councilwoman Jan Harris, Leland Mayor Brenda Bozeman, and Judge Sandra Ray.
The local leaders answered questions from members and discussed their experiences in office, challenges while running, and their daily tasks.
It is an event the League of Women Voters Membership Chairwoman Linda Kurta is proud of.
“When I joined the League of Women about five years ago we only had 40 members,” Kurta said. “Today we have 115. We’re growing by leaps and bounds. And that’s our goal to keep growing because the more members we have, the more action we can take.”
Kurta said the biggest challenge they face as an organization is getting younger women voters to the polls.
They plan to continue their efforts spreading the word at local campuses for the upcoming election.
