Legion Stadium will get new turf and become the home stadium for the Hammerheads

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council made some big decisions in the world of New Hanover County sports on Tuesday.

The council voted to let the Wilmington Hammerheads soccer team use Legion Stadium for three years. The team will play 16 home games at the stadium.

The Hammerheads and the city will share the profits made from food and beverages at the game. The city will receive 25 percent of the profits and the Hammerheads will receive 75 percent of the profits.

The council also voted to agree to a contract to replace the stadium’s field with a synthetic turf. The city of Wilmington, New Hanover County and the New Hanover County School System will contribute one third of the price to help pay for the new turf.
