Leland Diverging Diamond closing this weekend

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Drivers in Leland will have to endure another closure of the new Diverging Diamond Interchange as crews finish it up.

The NCDOT says the interchange for US 17/74/76 at Village and River roads in Leland will close at 5 a.m. Saturday. The DOT expects the road to reopen by 6 a.m. Monday.

The DOT says the weekend closure is so crews can place thermoplastic lane striping, which is much more resilient than traditional striping, and special markers that can withstand snow plows that are occasionally used in the winter. The work is weather conditional and may be postponed if there is rain or wet road conditions.

Motorists on NC 133/River Road, south of the interchange, heading toward Village Road in Leland or on US 74 West will be directed onto US 74 East toward Wilmington to follow their detour. Drivers using Village Road to access NC 133, south of the interchange or US 74/76 East toward Wilmington should take the ramp onto US 74/76 West toward Whiteville/Myrtle Beach and follow those detour signs.

Drivers are advised to slow down, use caution and stay alert while traveling in the area, and to expect possible delays.

The opening of this DDI is part of the Causeway Bridge Project, which is scheduled to be completed in November.
