Leland home destroyed in fire

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — An afternoon thunderstorm caused some major headaches in the Cape Fear area and might have even left a family without a home.

A fire destroyed a house on Nightingale Court in Leland.

No one was hurt, but two dogs did not make it out. Firefighters said the home was destroyed.

Crews believe lightning may have caused the fire to break out, but an investigation is still ongoing.

Overall, the storm led to a busy night for emergency responders.

The Leland Fire Department temporarily opened up an emergency command center.

“Because of the number of calls, and because of the fact that there were so many things going on at one time, we felt it was best to regroup and move back here to the fire station to be able to get a handle on everything that was going on,” Brunswick County Emergency Services Director Brian Watts said.

The storm even did some damage to the Scotchman on Highway 133.

The gas station pumps are blocked off because of the damaged awning.

Crews from Winnabow, New Hanover County, and Wilmington assisted with calls in the Leland area Tuesday night.
