Leland Hurricane Expo helps residents prepare in the midst of hurricane season

LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) — It only takes one storm to change a community.
Many residents turned out to the Leland Cultural Arts Center on Saturday for the town’s Hurricane Expo, taking the opportunity to learn how to prepare before a major storm hits. Attendees visited booths staffed by emergency management officials, first responders, The National Weather Service, and a variety of community organizations, all offering resources and preparedness tips.
WWAY meteorologists Charles McKeller, Jason Korver and Chief Meteorologist Lee Haywood were also on hand, encouraging residents to download the StormTrack-3 Weather App to stay informed before and during tropical weather.
Attendees had the chance to pick up storm preparedness materials, ask questions of local experts and learn about resources available before, during and after a hurricane.
With hurricane season underway, Leland Town Council member Veronica Carter said the best way to stay safe is to prepare before a storm is on the radar. She also encouraged community members to look out for one another, especially those who may need extra help.
“Get your kit ready, know the numbers, know the organizations you can get in touch with if you have any further questions, including the Town of Leland, and just be prepared. Help your neighbors — if you have elderly neighbors or those who may have mobility issues, reach out to them to make sure they are ready as well,” said Carter.
With several months still left in hurricane season, emergency officials say taking a few simple steps now can make a big difference when the next storm threatens southeastern North Carolina.
