Leland Police defeats Leland Fire, everyone wins in Operation Santa Cop

The Leland Police Department battled the Leland Fire Department for charity Saturday. The friendly match-up between forces helped collect toys for Operation Santa Cop, which provides needy children with gifts during the holidays.

The police department won the game in a landslide, taking home their fifth straight victory against the fire department. The game was played in honor of Rich Matthews, the Wilmington police officer killed earlier this year in a car crash.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s a brotherhood, and we want to let everyone know, that we didn’t forget about him, especially for his family. We want them to know that we’re still thinking about him and the family, and help them get through these tough times,” said Leland police officer Robert Ernest.

Each year, Operation Santa Cop helps out dozens of needy families in Leland. If you want to give a gift to the cause, contact the Leland Police Department.
