Local animal rescue organization receives a big donation
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday was a special day for the volunteers of Adopt an Angel.
This animal rescue organization had a transport van stolen from them about a month ago, but one local business surprised them with a special gift.
“We had a van stolen from the parking lot here at Petco, which was our transport vehicle, which was devastating for us,” Adopt an Angel Treasurer Jill Jones said.
Adopt an Angel takes dogs and cats from animal shelters and provides them with care they need along with finding their forever home.
“Every time we place one, we go and get one,” Jones said.
The volunteers are angels to the animals.
“The dog Switzy was rescued by one of the staff members at Scuba Now and asked us for some help,” Jones said.
But just as Switzy was taken in, the transport van was stolen. Scuba Now returned the good deed by donating a new one a week later.
“Every adoption agency has those issues and has hurdles to jump over, and that was just one of them,” volunteer Caitlin Phelps said.
A hurdle Adopt an Angel was able to leap over.
“We saw the worst in people when someone stole the van, but we saw the best in people when someone reaches out to help,” Jones said.
Jones says they are in the middle of this situation, too, when it comes to animals.
“‘Cause animals sometimes come from rough starts, and then we see wonderful homes pop up to help them,” she said.
Since 2004, the organization has re-homed more than 9,000 animals.
If you would like adopt a dog or a cat, Adopt an Angel adoption fairs are located in front of Petco on South College Road in Wilmington every weekend. The hours are operations are Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m to 5 p.m.
