Local bird rescue releases rehabilitated pelicans; how you can help future patients this winter
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH (WWAY) — Two Brown pelicans were recently nursed back to health at SkyWatch Bird Rescue in Castle Hayne.
Both birds were brought into the rescue’s care with injuries related to fishing tackle.
Two volunteers – including a WWAY producer – released the now-healthy birds back into the wild this past Saturday along Wrightsville Beach.
SkyWatch told the community that they are in-need of donations of fish, for the numerous other pelicans and patients they anticipate will need rehabilitation this winter.
The rescue added that they are also accepting Thanksgiving leftovers for the scavenger and omnivorous animals in their care.
It will offer these animals an enriching holiday treat and variety from their usual diets.
Any cooked foods and leftover meats can be utilized, but they are unable to use bare bones or carcasses at this time.
And, spices or seasonings do not matter; volunteers will inspect each donation.
Donations can be dropped off at the rescue at 3600 Lynn Ave. in Castle Hayne, any time.
Or, drop off during the rescue’s visitation hours from 12-4pm on Wednesdays through Sundays, and stick around to meet the animals after, for a small entry fee.
