Local law enforcement reacts to NYPD officers murdered

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover Sheriff Ed McMahon, along with law enforcement veterans are reacting to the killings of two NYPD officers this weekend; the killings, according to the shooter’s social media accounts, were in reaction to recent stories involving police officers not being indicted for homicides involving citizens.

Amidst the turmoil of yet another incident between law enforcement and the public, putting trust in those who protect us is becoming more and more important.

“Because we all want the same thing,” McMahon said. “We all want to be safe and we want our families to be safe.”

But for law enforcement veteran and Blue Line Radio host Marc Benson, that relationship is a delicate balance.

“The public doesn’t trust them,” Benson said. “We want to play basketball with them one minute and arrest them the next. We can’t play both roles.”

Benson says police need to stick with what they know best.

“Let the social workers and social programs enlist that type of public input but when it comes to law enforcement: What are your concerns about safety? How can I address them? And how can I protect you?”

Benson added that they needed to stay on their side of what he calls “The Blue Line,” what separates the public from anarchy.

Sheriff McMahon insists that the people and law enforcement are on the same team.

“We’re partners,” McMahon said. “We have to work together.”
