Local organization helps keep those in need warm

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Scarves in the Port City is a local group that is aimed at helping the homeless stay warm during the chilly winter months.

Winter seems to have finally hit Wilmington, and with that, there are some people who are in need of ways to stay warm. Scarves in the Port City is one way those folks can get help. The organization takes donations from drop-off locations throughout the area and leaves them around the city for those who need them. Scarves in the Port City attaches notes to the clothing that says that those who need them should take them. They collect scarves, hats, and gloves to keep the homeless warm.

All of the folks donating are not doing it for fame or recognition, but rather out of the kindness of their hearts.

“Yeah nobody’s left their names on the donations today and unless you’re a Facebook follower you wouldn’t even know this group of women and men that distribute these scarves”, said Evonne Varady, owner of one of the drop-off locations, Clean Eatz on Racine Drive.

Other locations include Dock Street Oyster Bar on Dock Street, Vapor Shack on Village Road in Leland, and Demetrius Farrior’s Island Training on Carolina Beach Road.
