Wilmington’s Verizon call center helps with hurricane relief telethon

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several major networks teamed up Tuesday night for the Hand in Hand telethon, which raised money to help those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The Verizon call center in Wilmington helped out with the event as well, and several people there said they were excited to help.

Some of them were personally affected by the hurricanes and say this is a time to help as much as possible to those less fortunate.

“I have family down in Puerto Rico,” Customer Services Advocate Laura Garcia Berges said. “Most of my family is in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and it definitely means a lot to me to be able to help out in the way that I can, when I’m miles away from home, definitely fills my heart.”

The TV event had some big names manning the phones and taking donations around the country. Stars like Justin Timberlake, Oprah, Leonardo DiCaprio and many more participated.

According to ABC News, the telethon has raised more than $14 million so far.

A spokesperson said the Verizon call center in Wilmington took a single donation of $100,000 during the event.
