Local elementary school receives grant

A local elementary school has been awarded a grant to promote healthy eating habits.

Alderman Elementary was one of 25 schools selected statewide by the USDA. Selection priority was given to schools that have at least 50 percent of their students eligible for free or reduced meal plans.

The total grant of more than a $1,000,000 was divided among all the participating schools. Alderman received $26,000.

This is the fifth year that North Carolina public schools have participated in the USDA’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Program.
