Local group protests Senator Boseman paying taxes

Pay your taxes.

That’s what a group of protestors outside the New Hanover County government building were asking of state Senator Julia Boseman today.

Nearly $5,000 in taxes were owed on a home Boseman owned with her former domestic partner.

The taxes and interest were paid last week on the home in New Hanover County — more than five months after they were due.

Boseman signed over the deed in April to her former domestic partner Melissa Jarrell.

Jarrell was unaware that the deed was signed over. But according to North Carolina law, it is legal for an owner to sign over property without the knowledge of the other party.

Today, Americans for Prosperity protested Boseman’s delinquent tax payment.

The group says it is hypocritical of Boseman, as a law-maker to not abide by laws she makes.

Boseman says she hasn’t lived in the house for two years, and legally gave over the property.

“You know I deeded the property over to her recently. We had reached an impasse and I wanted to give her more flexibility in how she wanted to dispose of the property. You know I gave up all of my equity in the property to give her this flexibility,” said Boseman.

Boseman said all of this came to light because of the recent custody battle for her son, with her former partner, Melissa Jarrell.

Americans for Prosperity say Boseman has set a bad example by not paying the taxes on time. Even though the taxes were paid on Friday, they went on with today’s protest to make the public aware of her failure to pay on time.
