Local schools locked down after shooting

WILMINGTON — For the third time in the past two months a number of local schools went on lockdown Wednesday. This time it was in response to a shooting on 11th and Orange Streets.

Investigators say a man was shot in the hip. He was taken to New Hanover Regional with minor injuries.

Because the shooter fled the scene, New Hanover High, Gregory, Williston and St. Mary’s Schools all went on lockdown.

No arrests have been made.

New Hanover High Principal Chris Furr says the temporary lockdown was just as a precaution since students were about to change classes.

Furr adds that had the students been in the middle of class, a lockdown wouldn’t have been necessary.
