Local student athletes sign letters of intent
It’s national letter of intent day, the day high school student athletes make their college athletic commitments official.
New Hanover High School had the largest group of signers on Wednesday, seven in all.
It was quite a production in the Brogden Hall Lobby. Megan Thompson will run track at Meredith. Everyone else will play college soccer, including Erin Koballa who signed with Duke. “My mom went to Carolina and my dad went to State, so going to Duke adds a bit of variety to the mix.”
Brannon Blanke is also going to be playing in the ACC. The career-leading scorer at New Hanover will play soccer at Clemson University. Blanke said, “It’s great to have all my friends and family here. I’ve been waiting a long time to sign. It’s been an exciting day, everybody’s been saying congratulations.”
A.J. Ferguson is also ACC bound. The South Brunswick Cougar senior will play college football at NC State.
Trask High School quarterback Josh Wiggins has a golden arm, and he’ll take his athletic ability to Davidson to play for the Wildcats.
At Laney, Greg Lockamy signed on the dotted line with the Campbell Camels to be an offensive lineman. “I met with the offensive line coach, and told me to try to come in at 285 pounds.”
Brittany Batts of Laney will sign later tonight to play soccer for East Carolina.
Meanwhile, at Hoggard, punter Marcus Lee signed with the Old Dominion Monarchs.
