Local teen visits White House
WILMINGTON — Some dreams do come true, just ask a Wilmington teen who got the chance to go to the white house and meet first lady Laura Bush.
The Dreams Center, which offers free arts education to underserved students in Wilmington, was nationally recognized as one of 18 arts and humanities programs to receive the 2007 “coming up taller award.”
Michael Sherrod has a lot of support for his efforts at the Dreams Center.
Dreams Center Executive Director Tracy Wilkes said, “Michael really represents the kind of talent, and sometimes undiscovered talent, that you find when you give kids a chance to express themselves.”
Ruby David is Michael’s foster mother. She said, “When I heard that Michael was going to the White House, I think I was more excited than Michael was.”
The “Coming up Taller” awards recognize and support outstanding community arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of young people.
