Brunswick Community College lockdown over after potential threat
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick Community College was locked down this morning, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Flax.
Flax says a potential threat was reported at BCC. She says campus police initiated the lockdown. The lockdown ended around 11:30 a.m.
During the lockdown Flax said students and staff on campus were safe.
“I thought it was a drill,” BCC student Thelma Roddy told WWAY after the lockdown was over. “And then when they(deputies) came through the hallways they were like ‘this is not a drill’ because there were other students in the hall so they had to pull them off and into the classrooms to make sure everyone was okay,” she continued.
Flax originally said South Brunswick High School and South Brunswick Middle School were also locked down. She later corrected that statement to say the high school and middle school were not locked down.
School District spokeswoman Jessica Swencki later said law enforcement was placed at those schools, along with Brunswick County Academy, “out of an abundance of caution,” and that the schools sheltered in place while BCC was under lockdown.
A BCC employee reached by WWAY said she was hiding under her desk, but did not know what led to the lockdown.
