Lousy economy seen in canceled NC vacation rentals

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — The slumping economy is showing up in canceled summer vacation rentals on the North Carolina coast.

The president of the North Carolina Vacation Rental Managers Association says cancellations are higher than usual. The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports the problem is becoming evident
because deposits for summer rentals booked last year usually are due in February.

Scott Leggat said one Outer Banks real estate company said it had a 32 percent cancellation rate. He said the Outer Banks and beaches below Wilmington seem to be most affected.

Leggat also said beach closures on the Outer Banks to protect endangered birds also could be affecting cancellations.
