Mailmen help food bank by picking up more than mail

Area post offices partnered with the food bank to help fill food pantries on Saturday.

Mail trucks, both big and small, picked up canned and boxed food along their route and brought it to the post office.

Volunteers greeted the drivers to help pack up the food for deliveries.

Food bank organizers say the support couldn’t come at a better time. “Everybody likes to give during the holidays and now the food is sort of dwindling and this will restock everything in our food bank,” said Beverly Hollingsworth of the Food Bank of Wilmington.

Volunteers expect to collect more than 10,000 pounds of food at each of the five post office collection sites.

The food bank serves shelters, pantries, and youth programs in four counties in our area.
