SUPPLY, NC (WWAY) – The fire near Ash and Supply that was under control last night became out of control today.

Ranger Bill Walker with the North Carolina Forest Service says low humidity and high winds caused a fire to jump the fire line and burn more than one hundred more acres of land near Makatoka Road.

Many houses were threatened, including the parents of BJ Shipley, but there was no damage to homes and no injuries reported.

“They were a little panicky but they were alright,” Shipley said. “The Forestry Service did a great job you know trenching making the fire lanes and they’re the heroes out here and they got the fire away from all of the houses.”

Crews will be back on scene tomorrow to further assess the situation.

The cause of the fire yesterday is now confirmed to be a controlled burn getting out of control.
