Man charged with stealing cash box from convenience store

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington police have arrested a man who is suspected of robbing the Kangaroo gas station on 17th street shortly after midnight on Friday.

54-year-old Leroy Thompson is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and related offenses. Police cay that Thompson entered the store and put his hand in his shirt, as if he had a gun. He then reached over and grabbed the cash box out of the register. The suspect left the store and got into a car across the street.
When police were able to stop the car, the suspect drove off before an officer approached him.

Officers were able to locate the cash box after a citizen alerted them that they had seen a man run by some houses with a black box. A short time later, police located the suspect hiding in some bushes beside a residence on the 1200 block of South 7th Street.

Thompson is currently being held in the New Hanover county detention facility on a $50,000 secure bond.
