RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — The man charged with killing Raleigh school teacher Zoe Welsh won’t be in court any time soon, after a state psychologist said in his forensic evaluation that Ryan Camacho is “incapable to proceed.”

The evaluation comes eight months after a Wake County grand jury indicted Camacho on first-degree murder and first-degree burglary charges in the January death of Zoe Welsch inside her home.

Authorities say Camacho is a repeat offender who broke into Welsch’s home on Clay Street and killed her while she was on the phone with 911 reporting an intruder.

Search warrants and court documents, Camacho has a criminal record and told detectives during interviews he used a rock as a weapon during the incident.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said the finding does not bring the case to an end but instead pauses proceedings while Camacho receives treatment.

“We don’t see this as being kind of the end of this case. It simply is a step in the process,” Freeman said.

According to Freeman, Camacho will remain in custody while undergoing medical treatment.

If he is restored to competency, prosecutors expect the case to move forward.

Freeman said there is no set timeline for when Camacho could be restored to competency, noting the process depends on the success of his treatment and often takes several months.
