Man injured after falling off roof at Sunny Point

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man is recovering after falling off a roof while doing contract work at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point.

The man worked for Baker Roofing out of Wilmington.

Company spokesperson Todd Kavanaugh said the man fell off a roof near the end of the workday on Thursday.

Kavanaugh said it appears the man lost his balance and fell. The company’s Vice President of Risk Management was on site and determined all safety standards were upheld. Kavanaugh said warning lines, which identify the edge of the roof, were in place.

The company could not give details on the man’s injuries or his identity, but said he started physical therapy Friday morning.

In a written statement, Kavanaugh said, “First and foremost our primary concern is for our employee’s health and well-being.  Safety is, and always has been, our first concern on all of our project sites, and the circumstances of yesterday’s events are under investigation. We are cooperating with all appropriate regulatory authorities to shed as much light on yesterday’s accident as possible.”

The contract work is part of an ongoing project at MOTSU.

MOTSU could not comment.

The NC Department of Labor said because of the location of the accident, it was referred to Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
