Man killed in Columbus head-on crash

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a head-on crash that claimed the life of a 70-year-old Columbus County man.

According to NCHP, the crash happened just after 6pm on Tuesday on Red Store Road, near the intersection of McMillian Road. Troopers say an SUV driven by 18-year-old Nathan Hester was traveling south on Red Store Road when his vehicle ran off the road. Troopers say Hester overcorrected, sending the SUV into the opposite lane.

The SUV struck a car being driven by 70-year-old Cornell Singletary Sr. head on. Singletary was pronounced dead at the scene. Hester was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Hester has been charged with misdemeanor Death by Vehicle.
