Man leads deputies on afternoon car chase, ends on UNCW campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A car chase on Racine Drive in Wilmington ended in a crash on the campus of UNC-Wilmington Wednesday afternoon.

A New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman says it happened around noon.

Investigators say a car on Racine Drive was driving erratically on the wrong side of the road, ran up onto the sidewalk, and wouldn’t stop. The driver, Spenser Janes, then drove onto campus.

Deputies pushed him off the road by the UNCW water tower, where he crashed.

Wilmington Police think it may be tied to a hit and run in the TJ Maxx parking lot.

The man was arrested and is in the New Hanover County Jail.

Janes was charged with injury to person, possession of drug paraphernalia, resist/delay/obstruct public officers, among others.
