Man pleads no contest to child abuse charges

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is going to prison on child abuse charges after pleading no contest in court today.

Arthur Maurice Mingeaud, 53, was charged with almost a dozen counts of felony child abuse. The prosecutors said it stemmed from a series of events in the spring of 2013.

Prosecutors told the judge Mingeaud and his wife were living in a trailer with their 15-year-old daughter in 2013 when a man their daughter met online, Vinni Valentine, came to live with them.

The prosecutor told the judge the trailer had no running water or electricity, so Mingeaud and his wife moved out. He said their daughter and Valentine stayed.

In April, the prosecutor said Mingeaud and his wife signed off their daughter’s custody to Valentine. He said Valentine and the girl moved to Greenville.

That is where the prosecutor said Valentine performed sexual acts with Mingeaud’s daughter and took pictures of her. The prosecutor said the girl eventually ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911.

The prosecutor said warrants for Mingeaud and his wife’s arrest were issued in June 2013, but he and his wife left the county. They were not arrested until September 2014.

In court, Mingeaud plead no contest to his charges. He said he did not sign off his daughter’s custody with the understanding that Valentine could have sex with her.

Mingeaud’s attorney said the victim admitted some of her relations with Valentine were consensual.

The judge sentenced Mingeaud to two consecutive sentences of 29-95 months in prison. She also ordered a restraining order between Mingeaud and his daughter.
