WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man charged in the crash that led to a fire and explosion at the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center has been sentenced in New Hanover County.

On Thursday, Jason Lee Beach pleaded guilty to felony serious injury by vehicle in connection with the Aug. 19, 2025, crash. He received a suspended sentence of 16 to 29 months and was placed on 36 months of supervised probation. He was given credit for 241 days spent in confinement prior to sentencing.

Beach also was convicted of hit and run causing property damage. For that charge, he received a 45-day sentence, which was also suspended, along with 36 months of supervised probation.

As part of his probation, Beach must enroll in and complete the Community Recovery Court Program and remain in custody until he can be assessed for the program. He is also required to submit to frequent screens and searches, pay monthly probation supervision fees and not operate a vehicle until properly licensed by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.

Beach struck gas lines near the veterinary hospital on New Centre Drive before leaving the scene, triggering an explosion and fire that destroyed the facility. Five firefighters were injured in the blast.

The 32,000-square-foot Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center was later demolished. The business has hired an architect to redesign the building and plans to move forward with reconstruction.
