Man killed, woman hurt in I-40 crash

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A 19-year-old man is dead and a 19-year-old woman is in the hospital after a wreck this morning on I-40. The wreck just before noon near mile marker 401 in Pender County shut down the westbound lanes for about two hours.

Highway patrol says Eber Banegas of Rose Hill was speeding when his SUV headed toward the median and he overcorrected. The vehicle rolled three times, throwing and killing Banegas. His female passenger was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
