Man pleads guilty to shooting, wounding NC officer
DURHAM, N.C. — A man has pleaded guilty to shooting and wounding a North Carolina police officer earlier this year.
Multiple media outlets report that 23-year-old Thomas Rashawn Monroe of Durham wept as he pleaded guilty Wednesday to assault with a deadly weapon. He was later sentenced to serve six months in jail.
Monroe said he shot through the front door of his apartment in July, trying to defend his family from someone who had fired 30 shots into the apartment earlier that night.
One of those bullets hit D.J. Youmans, who was responding to reports of gunfire and a break-in. He spent more than three months recovering before returning to duty in October.
