Manslaughter charges filed after infant dies sleeping in bed with mom

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County mom is facing charges after a medical examiner’s report noted negligence in the death of her infant.

Deputies said they responded to a home in the 6700-block of Carolina Beach Road earlier this month in reference to the death of a two-month-old. They said the baby boy died while sleeping in a bed with Candice Nicole Smith.

On Tuesday, deputies received the final report from the medical examiner’s office. They said the report indicated negligence. Smith was arrested yesterday and charged with involuntary manslaughter. She’s being held under a $250,000 bond, deputies said.
