Marines load thousands of vehicles at port

WILMINGTON — It was a busy military morning at the port of Wilmington.

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit loaded more than 2,000 military vehicles on the
USNS “Algol”.

The ship will transport the equipment to Afghanistan in the next two weeks.

Officers supervising the loading process this morning compared getting that much equipment onto one vessel to the puzzle game Tetris, where players have to squeeze different shaped blocks into tight spaces.

Operations Director Major Isabel Geiger said, “Our labor is very good. They’re able to stow the vehicles very tightly with just inches between very large pieces of equipment. So they’re pretty proficient.”

The unit will be deployed in Afghanistan later this spring.
