Masonboro Island program receives grant
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A $9,750 grant will ensure that Masonboro Island continues to stay clean.
Duke Energy presented the check Friday morning to the Island Explorer Program, which helps to preserve the island. Shortly after, 70 Forest Hills Elementary fifth graders boarded a boat to the island for an educational field trip. The program’s director, Haywood Newkirk, said the grant will allow the island to be preserved for generations.
“It benefits the kids in that manner, it benefits the community because it raises awareness of the island and what a jewel it is for our community,” said Newkirk.
The grant will allow the Island Explorer Program to grow from 300 students per year to more than 800 this year.
