McCrory reaches out to public for support on borrowing $3B

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — With Republican lawmakers looking elsewhere for money for roads and infrastructure, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory is asking the public for support to push his plan to borrow $3 billion for public works projects.

McCrory spoke at an engineer’s luncheon in Raleigh on Tuesday, asking them to call their legislators to get two bond bills each worth $1.5 billion on the November ballot.

The governor says the plan is popular outside Raleigh, even if leaders in the General Assembly have doubts about the amount of borrowing.

The Senate budget released Monday did not include either of the bond packages, instead increasing Division of Motor Vehicles fees and transferring money from the Highway Patrol to pay for $300 million in road building.
