McCrory, tax overhaul opponents differ on result

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory and other North Carolina conservative leaders remain convinced last year’s tax overhaul law will result in more money in people’s wallets and more jobs, even as critics insist most people will see higher taxes.

McCrory used Tuesday’s tax filing deadline to celebrate lower income and corporate income tax rates approved by the legislature.

He said at a news conference the changes are already helping attract companies to build in the state. An American Legislative Exchange Council report says North Carolina is now the nation’s sixth most economically competitive state.

Critics to the changes held their own news conference Tuesday to lament the loss of a refundable tax credit for the working poor also now repealed.

The changes don’t affect 2013 individual income tax returns due Tuesday night.
