McGowan Softball Tournament raises money for scholarship, park
WILMINGTON, NC (CFCC) — Cape Fear Community College recently received more than $2,000 from the Carolina Beach Downtown Initiative. The donation came from the proceeds of the 3rd Annual Michael McGowan Softball Tournament in Carolina Beach, presented by the Pleasure Island Revitalization Association.
Due to heavy rain in October, the annual event was postponed until mid-November, and even though several teams had to drop out due to the schedule change, proceeds topped $5,000, which were divided between the McGowan scholarship at CFCC and a fund for facilities improvements at the Mike Chappel Park in Carolina Beach.
The Michael McGowan Memorial Endowed Scholarship at CFCC was established in memory of beloved Chef Michael McGowan, who passed away in 2012. The scholarship named in his honor benefits CFCC students enrolled in the culinary arts program.
“The community’s support of this event is extraordinary. Michael McGowan was certainly well-loved by his friends, neighbors and customers,” said Bob Jones, Associate Director of the Cape Fear Community College Foundation. “This scholarship is a wonderful tribute to McGowan and his passion for cooking. Many of our culinary students will benefit from this scholarship, and the training they receive will help to carry on McGowan’s legacy.”
The Cape Fear Community College Foundation exists solely to support the students, instructors, programs and mission of the College.
