MeadWesvaco to close NC plant

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – MeadWesvaco says it is closing a plant in North Carolina and shifting production to other facilities.

Henrico County-based MeadWesvaco said Wednesday that its beverage packaging plant in Wilmington, N.C., will be shut down by August. Some equipment will be moved to the company’s plant in Lanette, Ala. About 105 workers will lose their jobs.

MeadWesvaco says the closure is part of a cost management program.

The company had announced in January that it planned to lay off 2,000 employees and close or restructure 12 to 14 production facilities.

MeadWestvaco has been struggling with sharply lower demand for its consumer packaging and office products.
