Michigan woman still recovering after Wilmington assault; suspect’s court date delayed
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Michigan woman who was seriously injured in an alleged assault in Wilmington last month continues to recover as she prepares to begin an intensive rehabilitation program, according to her family.
Savannah Johnson, 22, had been living in Wilmington for only a few weeks before the attack.
Johnson’s parents said she remains in high spirits but is still working to regain movement in her arms and legs after suffering multiple fractures and other serious injuries caused by strangulation. She is expected to travel to the Midwest soon for a rehabilitation program that will last six to eight weeks.
A Camp Lejeune Marine, Isaac Ruiz, has been arrested in connection with the case. He is charged with assault by strangulation, assault inflicting serious bodily injury and first-degree burglary.
Ruiz was scheduled to appear in court Thursday, but the hearing has been continued until January 2027.
Johnson’s father, Ricky Johnson, said the family is concentrating on her recovery while the criminal case moves through the court system.
“We’re trying to put all of our positive energy and focus on Savannah and her healing. We know the court systems will do what they’re supposed to do. Right now, we’ll just trust that they’re doing the right thing,” Ricky said.
Several fundraisers have been established to help cover Johnson’s medical treatment and rehabilitation expenses. The fundraisers have raised more than $52,000 combined.
