Middle school students cast their vote

Politics found its way to the classroom today. Students at South Brunswick Middle School participated in their own Election Day as a social studies lesson.

Many of them had their own ideas of what politics is all about.

85% of South Brunswick Middle School students registered to vote and participated in their own mock elections. Even though their vote will not count in this year’s election, they still wanted their voices to be heard. “I voted for McCain personally because that’s who my parents are probably going to vote for,” said Joey Kronenwetter, a 7th grader.

For Destiny Howell, it was a different vote, for the same reason. “Who did you vote for? Barack Obama. Why? Because my mom and dad are democrats and I support them 100 percent.”

You won’t find many local races on these ballots. These middle school students are more concerned with the showdown between Barack Obama and John McCain.

Early exit polls showed Obama and McCain running neck and neck for this years’ election. The kids social studies teacher Mr. Slease says the students are more aware of global and local issues than any other generation he’s seen.
