Mixed drinks now permitted to be sold at Wilmington Sharks games

The Sharks are still waiting on final approval from Raleigh and The A.L.E. and have not yet received their liquor license.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council has granted authorization for city staff to negotiate the financing of $32 million for various projects spanning the city.

The resolution allows for the negotiation of financing pertaining to streetscape and Riverwalk improvements, the acquisition of property previously housing the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence, and the development of the nCino Sports Complex.

This decision by the council is a routine administrative step in funding the city’s capital improvements. All of these projects had received prior approval from the council during the current fiscal year.

One notable change on the horizon is the introduction of new beverage selections at Wilmington Sharks games. Also during the council’s recent session, a vote was passed to permit the sale of mixed drinks at Sharks’ games.

Mayor Bill Saffo emphasized the significant entertainment value that the Sharks bring to the city, highlighting the decision as a step towards creating a level playing field across all city venues.

“We followed the policy like we do at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater and the Live Oak Bank Pavilion that you can sell alcohol in those venues. It’s just unifying the policy, keeping it consistent across the board so people know that when they open up a business or do business with the city in that kind of venue they can do this,” said Saffo.

Additionally, the council unanimously approved the Greenfield Park Master Plan, which encompasses initiatives such as repaving walking paths and replacing the Lion’s Bridge.
