Mixed feelings over Carolina Beach Road proposals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Could more construction in Wilmington follow as one project finishes?

The construction along Burnett Boulevard and Front Street is expected to finish soon.

But some business owners are worried for the future.

“When you’re taking that much property from us, where we’re going to have to move our sign and losing parking spots. There’s no way for us to stay in business,” manager of Dubliner Pub and Patio Rob Potts said.

Potts said he is concerned for not only the future of the business, but for his own livelihood and others feel the same.

“The overall benefit once it is completed is something to look forward too, but having to try to feed myself in between those times can sometimes be challenging,” owner of Performance Cycles Joe Petersen said.

Construction has been going on since April in front of both Performance Cycles and Dubliner Pub and Patio.

The current project is expected to be finishing soon.

But with the Carolina Beach Road proposal as well as a separate proposal to widen South Front Street.

A lot of future construction could be in the works.

“I mean it’s not unfair because everyone’s going to have to deal with it, it’s just evolution. But you know it’s not fun, but again it’s something we got to deal with,” Petersen said.

The proposed construction is likely years away. Once it begins Potts just hopes it isn’t the end for the bar.

“Everybody that comes in here I know them by first name basis, I have their beer poured, I have their drink poured as soon as they come in the door. And I mean you just don’t find bars like that anymore and for this community to lose something like that because of a widening expansion is just ridiculous,” Potts said.

The Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting on Monday for people to learn more about the project.

The meeting will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sunset Park Elementary School.
