Mom in Greensboro fire charged with 3 counts of second-degree murder

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WFMY) — A mother tied to a fire that left three children dead was charged with murder Monday, according to police.

The Greensboro Police Department said Brandi Sturdivant, 29, is charged with three counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of three of her children who died in a fire on Dec. 12, 2022.

On that December morning, Greensboro Police, Greensboro Fire, and Guilford County EMS responded to 2518 Grimsley Street about a structure fire call. After the fire was contained, investigators determined three young children — all under the age of five — were found dead inside.

Sturdivant is already in jail on three counts of felony child abuse related to this case because police said Sturdivant confessed to keeping drugs in the house and leaving her children at home alone. An autopsy report showed there was cocaine found in the 4-year-old’s system at the time of his death.

She is scheduled for a court appearance on the new charges on Tuesday, March 12.

Sergeant J.R. Waddell commended the department’s homicide investigators and the work done with multiple agencies: “Detective (Edward) Bruscino worked diligently with this investigation.”
