UPDATE: Two 15-year-olds face charges over Columbus County clown posts

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Two 15-year-olds are charged with felonies after social media posts began circulating about ‘clowns’ and ‘purging.’

On Monday, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and Whiteville Police Department became aware of the social media posts that threatened violence.   Investigators from both law enforcement agencies  began investigating.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michelle Tatum says after reviewing evidence, the North Carolina SBI’s Computer Crimes Unit was also asked to assist with the investigation. After following leads and going door to door interviewing parents, investigators identified persons of interest.

Tatum says the social media account has been seized and all posts deleted.

“We don’t take this as a joke. I don’t think it’s funny under any circumstances,” said Columbus County Sheriff Lewis Hatcher. “I take it seriously, and the other law enforcement agencies involved in this take it seriously.”

The sheriff says they have stepped up efforts to be sure schools and children are safe. The two teens are charged in connection with Monday’s social media posts, not the new one making the rounds.

The new social media account also warns of a purge. “We hitting up central middle school wednesday if y’all want y’all child alive n safe u better leave them home,” it reads.

Tatum says they are aware of the additional accounts and it is being investigated.

Sheriff Hatcher with Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and Chief Rosier with Whiteville Police Department say that all county and city schools will be closely monitored for any suspicious activity.

The two agencies say they have also increased law enforcement patrols at all county and city schools.  Officers will remain vigilant to ensure the safety of students and faculty.
