WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — The only suspect to survive a deadly police shooting outside a Wilmington Pizza Hut in October said Monday in a jailhouse interview he first realized police were on the scene when officers opened fire.
“When the door opened they shot at us,” 20-year-old Jalani Smith said Monday from behind the security glass that separates visitors from inmates at the New Hanover County jail. “I ran back inside. That’s the only reason I lived.”
Beyond that, Smith wouldn’t speak about the particulars of the case. He has yet to be indicted on the charges of first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery for which he’s been held in the jail in lieu of a $1.5 million bond.
