More than 500 knitted hats given to kids at Wilmington school
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After months of knitting, a group of volunteers were able to give more than 500 handmade hats to all the students of Rachel Freeman School of Engineering.
Nancy Schein, a member of Lutheran Church of Reconciliation in Ogden, began the service project back in early Spring and recruited some of her friends at Plantation Village to join her. Schein said she knitted more than 80 hats herself.
Students assembled in the gym today for the presentation and were each handed a hat, all different colors and patterns.
Schein said “I said to myself ‘Oh I made that one and look at that one, I remember who made that one.’ I mean it’s just overwhelming. It’s just overwhelming.”
Schein added that all the yarn was donated.
She says she still has yarn left and is going to be knitting hats for Good Shepherd and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.
