More temporary worker layoffs at NC DOT
Temporary worker layoffs have soared at the North Carolina Department of Transportation as sagging road-building revenues keep delaying projects.
Department spokesman, Ernie Seneca, said Wednesday more than 750 workers have recently been laid off, including 350 in the last three weeks.
In early December, Seneca said only 88 workers had been let go, but said more cuts were likely.
The layoffs come as transportation tax and fee collections are expected to fall $110 million short of projections.
Seneca said the declining revenues have forced transportation leaders to delay even longer, large highway construction projects.
