Motorcyclist identified in fatal trash truck crash

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — Highway Patrol says a motorcyclist died Tuesday morning after crashing into a garbage truck in New Hanover County.

According to Highway Patrol, a Pink Trash truck was picking up trash traveling west along Sidbury Road, and then was making a right turn onto Island Creek Road. A motorcycle, also traveling on west, was reportedly speeding when it approached the trash truck. It was unable to stop, and struck the garbage truck.

The motorcycle then began to overturn and came to rest in a nearby yard, troopers say.

The driver of the motorcycle, 25-year-old Andrew Hartwell, died at the scene. Troopers say Hartwell was wearing a helmet.

Troopers say no impairment is suspected, but high speed was a factor in the collision.

No charges have been filed.
