Mourners say goodbye to Bladen commissioner

Family and friends said goodbye to a long time public servant in Bladen County today. Hundreds of people gathered at Elizabethtown Middle School to remember County Commissioner Margaret Lewis-Moore, who passed away last weekend.

In addition to her work as commissioner, she also served on the school board and worked for the school district, even winning the county’s Principal of Year award while at East Arcadia.

“She was a very very dedicated person to the job,” said Veretta Santiago, a teacher who worked for Moore. “She was understanding. She cared about what happened in the community, and a very loving person. A loving mother.”

An autopsy report shows Moore died from pneumonia just days after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.

No word yet on who will fill her seat on the County Commission.
