Mourners say goodbye to Burney

Wilmington lost a long-time civic leader over the weekend. John Jay Burney Jr. passed away at his home on Saturday. He was 85.

Today, members of the community gathered at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church for Burneys funeral service. Burney leaves behind a long legacy of service and was once named North Carolina’s most influential state senator.

A building at UNCW and part of I-140 are named after Burney.

Burney was buried at Oakdale Cemetery.
